Geronimo Stilton is a fictional rat who lives in New Mouse City on Mouse Island and works as the editor of a newspaper called The Rodent's Gazette.

In Geronimo Stilton #20: Surf's Up Geronimo!, Geronimo is tired because of too much work at the newspaper, and he and his co-workers decide that a vacation would be great for him. They plan to send him to a hotel near a beach and he loves the idea and is looking forward to having fun and a good time.

But, the hotel is bad and dirty, and he finds it hard to sleep and is disgusted with the fact that everything is filthy. This is only the start of the adventure that follows, where he escapes from sharks, runs into his nephew, and after an amazing adventure, manages to go back home.

The Geronimo Stilton series is colourfully illustrated and written as autobiographical adventures of the title character. The series is meant for children between the ages of eight and twelve. The series also has a host of other characters who are related to the titular character in some way, such as Geronimo's younger sister named Thea Stilton, a cousin named Trap Stilton, and a favorite nephew, Benjamin Stilton.

Geronimo is portrayed as a nervous, mild-mannered mouse who would like to live a quiet life in Geronimo Stilton #20: Surf's Up Geronimo!, but he somehow keeps getting involved in far-away adventures with Thea, Trap, and Benjamin. The cast is sometimes joined by Aunt Sweetfur.
