Summary Of The Book

The House Of Silk: The New Sherlock Holmes Novel is the latest novel about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the fictional character immortalised by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was written by Anthony Horowitz after being approved by the Conan Doyle estate. In this book, a mysteriously whispered phrase sends Holmes and his friend Watson in pursuit of a shocking conspiracy, one that signals an enormous threat to society itself.

Detective Sherlock Holmes is based at 221B Baker Street in London. He solves difficult cases using his astute reasoning powers and forensic science skills. His talent for adopting any disguise effortlessly also comes in handy during his endeavors. He is assisted by his friend and biographer, Dr. Watson. The character of Sherlock Holmes is partially based on Joseph Bell, Arthur Conan Doyle’s former university teacher.

The book begins during the November of 1890. The weather is ruthlessly cold, and Holmes and Watson are sitting by the fire and drinking tea. They are interrupted by the arrival of an unexpected visitor. As it turns out, the visitor is one Edmund Carstairs, an art dealer who is being stalked by a dangerous man. Carstairs appeals to Holmes for help.

Holmes and Watson set out on a mission to help Carstairs. They begin to encounter one sinister event after another, including a brutal murder. As they continue to pursue the case, they come across a seemingly random phrase ‘The House of Silk’. The mysterious phrase takes the case in a new direction. At one point, Holmes even ends up in prison.

As the mystery begins to unravel, Holmes and Watson discover that the case goes much deeper than they once thought. With the dangerous secrets about to be revealed, society could be shaken to its very foundations. The conspirators hold the upper hand, but Holmes might just have a trick or two up his sleeve.

The House Of Silk: The New Sherlock Homes Novel was published in 2011. It received mainly positive reviews. Horowitz was appreciated for retaining the true spirit of the original Sherlock Holmes books while adding a modern touch to appeal to the current readership.
