A Brief History of Time, published in 1988, was a landmark volume in science writing and in world-wide acclaim and popularity, with more than 9 million copies in print globally. The original edition was on the cutting edge of what was then known about the origins and nature of the universe. But the ensuing years have seen extraordinary advances in the technology of observing both the micro-and the macrocosmic world-observations that have confirmed many of Hawking's theoretical predictions in the first edition of his book.

Hawking was born on January 8, 1942. He was educated at St. Albans School, Hertfordshire. In 1962, he graduated with a BA from University College, Oxford. He then embarked on a three-decade long teaching career at the University of Cambridge as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. He has a motor neurone disease, a disorder that has significantly worsened over the years. As of 2012, it has reached a point where his near-total paralysis has forced him to communicate only via a speech-generating device. Hawking has been married two times, with both marriages ending in a divorce. He has two sons and a daughter from his first marriage. Hawking’s contributions to the field of theoretical physics have earned him several honorary degrees and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
