A Walk To Remember, set in the 1950s, is the love story of two teenagers who fall for each other despite having vastly different personalities.

Summary Of The Book

A Walk To Remember is the story of a couple of teenagers who walk hand in hand on a bittersweet journey of love and loss.

The story is set in the 1950s in the small town of Beaufort, North Carolina. It is a first person narrative written from the perspective of Landon Carter. The prologue introduces Landon at age 57. He recounts his past experiences, beginning with the time he was a 17-year-old high school senior.

Landon does not have a date for the school dance, one that he is expected to attend as he is the class president. Unwillingly, he ends up asking Jamie Sullivan to accompany him to the dance.

Jamie is the daughter of the church minister of Beaufort. She is quiet and religious, and carries the Bible with her everywhere. She is content to live in her own world - looking after her widowed father, tending to hurt animals, and serving as a volunteer at the local orphanage.

Landon has fun with Jamie at the school dance and by his own admission, she turned out to be the best date possible. As Landon keeps learning more and more about Jamie everyday, he starts falling in love with her. He share his feelings with Jamie after their first dance on New Year’s eve. In response, Jamie reveals her painful secret. In the months that follow, Landon learns important lessons of love, pain, and loss from Jamie. His heart is touched, and he finally takes a shocking decision in the name of love.

A Walk To Remember was released in October 1999. It spent a few months on the bestseller list. The book was adapted into a contemporary feature film of the same name. The movie was released on January 25, 2002. It starred Mandy Moore and Shane West in the lead roles, and was directed by Adam Shankman.
